Every age and generation must be as free to act for itself, in all cases, as the ages and generation which preceded it. The vanity and presumption of governing beyond the grave, is the most ridiculous and insolent of all tyrannies.

Wedding Services

Because several states, including Kentucky, passed marriage laws discriminating against certain U.S. citizens during the November 2004 national election, Clifton Unitarian's minister, Rev. Todd F. Eklof has chosen to stop performing any wedding ceremonies. In his November 7, 2004 sermon, Rev. Eklof told the Clifton community:

"...as a show of my solidarity with my gay and lesbian brothers and sisters, I have decided to no longer participate in, or perform wedding ceremonies as part of my ministerial function. I will not resume until all eleven of the state laws immorally discriminating against gay marriage are overturned. Marriage has become an institution used to discriminate against a segment of our society and I refuse to participate in it until it has been redeemed."

He also said:

"When the greater culture guises its bigotry and fear in the clothing of 'moral values,' we must, as individuals and organizations, call it anything but 'moral.' We must name it for what it is and actively work to counter this twisted spin that calls hate ‘good' and prejudice 'moral.'"
